CLH Executive Director and President Deacon Nancy Ackerman’s Remarks at a House Dedication

October 2, 2025

Good Afternoon, friends.

What a journey this has been! A long road, yes—but every step has brought us to this moment. And what a joy it is to finally stand here together and celebrate this incredible “homecoming.”

At California Lutheran Homes, we believe something very simple and very powerful: every person deserves a safe, stable, and affordable place to call home. Because we know this truth—when people are housed, they thrive. Health improves. Education flourishes. Dreams are within reach. Communities grow stronger.

Back in 2019, we met the Biddy Mason Charitable Foundation—young, energetic, and already transforming the lives of current and former foster youth. Their vision was bold, their leadership inspiring—but their headquarters was the CEO’s garage. They needed more than just space. They needed a home.

In 2020, CLH stepped forward. We purchased this property so that Biddy’s programs could grow, and so that former foster youth could find not only housing but hope in the apartment above. Since then, we’ve been proud to stand beside Biddy Mason Charitable Foundation, providing $6,700 each month in rent support.

And then began the work of transformation. With HomeAid OC/LA and so many partners, we dreamed and planned. We endured reviews, hearings, fundraising, designs, construction challenges, and landscaping revisions. And through five years of persistence, what you see today emerged: a restored Craftsman home, built to serve, built to welcome, built to honor the remarkable legacy of Biddy Mason herself.

Because make no mistake—Biddy Mason has been our unseen companion every step of the way. Her faith. Her courage. Her determination to invest in others and to give generously when she herself had once been denied freedom—that spirit has guided us. When we grew weary, Biddy’s example kept us moving forward.

And now, here we are. Grateful to God. Grateful to every partner, donor, leader, and friend who helped make this vision a reality. Grateful especially to Biddy, who reminds us that no matter how hard or long the journey, the road always leads us home.
